If you’re the best, accept students with low grades and perform wonders with them – Education Minister to ‘Grade A’ schools

Image
The Education Minister is asking Grade “A” schools to learn to accept students with low grades and mould them into good students capable of passing their West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). According to Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, that’s the best way to assess how best these schools are. Speaking at the launch of the University of Cape Coast at 60 celebrations in Cape Coast, the Minister said always receiving the best Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) students and making score good WASSCE grades does not make them the best schools. But he stated that receiving students with low grades and guiding them to pass their WASSCE will make the schools stand out. “There are places where teachers are complaining. Why are you bringing students with an aggregate of 20 here? I had a wonderful conversation with a man who is very high up. “He called me one day and said, ‘Why are you sending students with an aggregate of 20 to PRESEC?’ And I said, “I think PRESEC...

Unprecedented strike coming if Gov’t doesn’t increase salaries – TUC

Image
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has warned that it will embark on an industrial action never-seen-before in the history of Ghana if the government does not increase the salary of members. Speaking at a forum in Accra on Thursday, April 21, Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr Yaw Baah asked the government not to hide behind the impact of the coronavirus and ongoing Russia and Ukraine war not to increase salaries. “Employers should index our pay to the inflation because the employer change the prices of their goods so the inflation rate does not affect them the way it is affecting us therefore we should get our salaries indexed,” he stated. Dr Yaw Baah urged workers not to rely too much on the government and employers, saying that the members of the union ought to ask questions about what they can do for themselves as workers and unions. “We will negotiate effectively this year and that one ,I want to assure you that I will lead that negotiation,” he assured. “We will continue to talk...

Elon Musk tweets ‘Love Me Tender’ days after Twitter takeover offer

Image
Billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk posted a tweet on Saturday saying “Love Me Tender”, days after he took aim at Twitter Inc with a $43 billion cash takeover offer. After Musk’s TED talk on Thursday, he hinted at the possibility of a hostile bid in which he would bypass Twitter’s board and put the offer directly to its shareholders, tweeting: “It would be utterly indefensible not to put this offer to a shareholder vote”. Over the weekend Musk, already the San Francisco-based company’s second-largest shareholder after amassing a 9.1% stake in the social media firm, tweeted Twitter board’s “economic interests are simply not aligned with shareholders”. Twitter on Friday adopted a “poison pill” to limit Musk’s ability to raise his stake in the company. Some deferred students used fees for betting, buying vehicles and bakery – KNUST Management

Image
The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has explained their decision to ask over 6,000 students to defer their courses. They stated that some of the affected students are playing games with them. According to Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe, the University’s Public Relations Officer, some students have invested their fees in ventures such as betting, buying vehicles for online ride-hailing services and bakery. “The problem we have now is that a number of students are playing games with the University. For example, they use their school fees to buy cars for Uber, others are using it to set up bakeries, and others are also using it for betting, and we have evidence.” “Some parents have even sent us audio where students have received the fees but have refused to pay or simply trading with the money.” Dr Bekoe said this on Joy FM’s Midday News in an interview with Emefa Apawu on Wednesday. Authorities of the KNUST had earlier issued a release notifying ...

Deputy Employment Minister justifies CLOGSAG’s demand for neutrality allowance

Image
The Deputy Employment and Labour Relations Minister has explained the rationale behind the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG’s) demand for government to pay them a neutrality allowance. According to Bright Wireko-Brobby, the allowance payment will reinforce the group’s commitment to be neutral. He said this has necessitated the group’s request for the allowance, which government has agreed to. However, the Deputy Minister said the name for the allowance has not been firmed up completely. “For them, they make a case that they cannot attend any political programme, therefore, do not get anything from the political landscape, and then they are committed to staying neutral and will not get any form of allowance or whatever. “They are deprived of those things and, therefore, government must help them to stay neutral. So that allowance is what they have put forward, and we have agreed that we have to look at this, but it is not firmly agreed on the name to g...

Why Koreans could soon become a year younger

Image
“How old are you”? It’s a simple question with a clear answer. But for those in South Korea, answering this question is anything but straightforward. In South Korea, when a baby is born they are considered a year old. Come New Year’s Day, they gain another year. This means a baby born in December would be considered to be two years old in just a few weeks. But this “Korean age” method may soon change as the country’s president-elect Yoon Suk-yeol is pushing for this centuries-old method of counting to be abolished. Lee Yong-ho, the chief of the president-elect’s transition committee, said the incoming administration was looking to standardise the way age is counted in order to bring South Korea in line with the rest of the world. He said the different age calculations had resulted in “persistent confusion” and “unnecessary social and economic costs”. The new proposal seems to have been widely embraced by some – but experts say they have doubts as to whether it will actually be im...

Serwaa Broni Saga: Three Ghanaians petition Parliament for Akufo-Addo’s impeachment

Image
Three Ghanaian citizens, Issifu Seidu Kudus Gbeadese, Elikem Kotoko and Stephen Kwabena Attuh have petitioned Parliament to commence impeachment proceedings against President Akufo-Addo over the allegations of Serwaa Broni. According to the three, the allegations, if proven to be true, would amount to “human rights abuse, abuse of office, exposing the security of Ghana to external threat…” as well as “…dragging the name of the high office of President into disrepute”. The three, in their petition, took inspiration from Article 41 (a), (b) and (f) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana to uphold and defend the Constitution. They further stated they believe the allegations levelled against the President established sufficient grounds for the invocation of Article 69(1) of the Constitution, 1992. Ms. Evelyn Aidoo (Serwaa Broni) alleged among other things that she had an affair with the President.

Consider one of your ‘rivals’ as running mate – Ephson to Mahama

Image
A successful presidential bid in 2024 for former President John Dramani Mahama will depend on repackaging himself and picking a new running mate. This is the view of veteran journalist and pollster, Ben Ephson, who has joined calls for Mahama’s 2020 running mate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to be dropped. According to Ephson, in an interview on Joy News, the former president must consider picking any of his political contenders for the flagbearership slot as his running mate. “Mahama would have to repackage himself because a Mahama with the same running mate is going to be difficult [to win 2024 general elections]. He may have to form an alliance or perhaps, pick one of the [NDC presidential contenders] as his running mate. He explained further that, “…where Mahama is, he has the advantage of being marketed already. And Mahama with all his body language looks like he is retaining his running mate for 2020 [general elections]. If he does I think he should forget 2024.” So far, ...

Mr. Mahama gave an overview of the nation’s challenges including the economic malaise due to mismanagement and unbridled borrowing, which have both contributed to extreme hardships on the Ghanaian people. The challenges confronting the country, as a result of mismanagement...

Appiatse explosion: Mining truck driver sacked with one-month pay, recounts ordeal

Image
The truck driver, who was transporting explosives that exploded at Appiatse near Bogoso, in the Western Region, on January 20, has finally broken his silence. The heartbroken driver, Alfred Pappoe, who is still nursing his wounds, said he is now out of job. He alleged that his boss at Arthanns Company in February, handed him a termination letter with one-month salary without consideration for the trauma he went through as a result of the accident. Mr. Pappoe, who earned GHC1,100 a month, said his boss explained that the contract with MAXAM Company, had been lost after the accident, hence the need for him to be laid off. “At the end of February, my boss told me that MAXAM Company had terminated the contract with him, as such, he also had to terminate his contract with me,” Mr. Pappoe said. He expressed disappointment that his boss could do that to him, given the sacrifice he made to save the community from the effects of the explosion, if it had occurred in the middle of the town ...
